Abstract:

Sport psychology has emerged as a critical discipline in understanding and enhancing athletic performance, mental resilience, and overall well-being in sports. This letter synthesizes current knowledge and proposes future directions for research and practice in the field. Recent advances have demonstrated the effectiveness of psychological interventions, including cognitive-behavioral techniques, mindfulness training, and mental skills development, in optimizing athletic performance across various sports and competitive levels. The growing recognition of mental health challenges among athletes has further highlighted the need for comprehensive psychological support systems within sports organizations. Additionally, technological innovations such as biofeedback and virtual reality are creating new opportunities for personalized mental training and performance enhancement. Despite these advancements, significant gaps remain, particularly in cross-cultural applications, lifespan approaches to athlete development, and the ethical integration of emerging technologies. Future research should prioritize interdisciplinary collaboration, culturally sensitive interventions, and longitudinal studies to better understand the psychological demands of athletes at different career stages. By addressing these challenges, sport psychology can continue to evolve as both a scientific discipline and an applied practice, ultimately contributing to the holistic development of athletes worldwide. This letter calls for strengthened partnerships between researchers, practitioners, and sports organizations to bridge the gap between theory and practice, ensuring that psychological insights translate into meaningful benefits for athletes at all levels of competition.

Abstract:

Background and aims: Stress and anxiety are important factors that can highly affect athletes' performance. They can also influence the mental and physical heath of the athletes. The aim of this study was to compare the stress-coping styles in two groups of athletes and non-athletes and evaluating its relationship with their mental health. Methods: One hundred athletes were selected randomly and 100 non-athletes were voluntarily participated in this study. Both groups answered the standard Yoo coping styles and Goldberg general health questionnaires. Relevant statistical tests were used for data analysis. Results: Athletes in comparison with non-athletes used problem-focused and emotion focused coping styles more frequently, but, they used avoidant-coping styles less frequently (P<0.01). Also, in the former group, while the application of problem- and emotion-focused coping-styles were correlated with increase in mental health, avoidant coping styles were correlated with decrease in mental health. In contrast, in non-athletes, using problem-focused and avoidant coping styles were correlated with increase and decrease in mental health, respectively (P<0.05). Regression analysis demonstrated that stress-coping styles could largely predict the mental health variation in athletes and nonathletes groups (P<0.05).Conclusion: Findings of this study provide more support for the importance of coping styles and its relationship with mental health in stress situations such as sport fields.

Abstract:

Aims: The present study is carried out with the purpose of determining the predictability of psychological health, by cognitive emotion regulation style, used by elite athletes. Methodology: A sample of 385 (285 male and 100 female) elite athletes were chosen using cluster random sampling. Participants completed Mental Health Inventory (MHI) and Cognitive Emotion Regulation Questionnaire short version. Analysis of the data involved Pierson’ s correlation and multivariate regression analyses. Results: Results indicated signifi cant relationship between cognitive emotion regulation styles and psychological health components. Results of regression analysis indicated that among styles of cognitive emotion regulation, Positive refocusing and positive reappraisal can positively predict the psychological well-being. Moreover, psychological distress can predicted positively by catastrophizing and also Positive refocusing can negatively predict psychological distress. Conclusion: As results indicates, the strategies employed by athletes in order to regulate their emotions can play a significant role in the determination of their psychological health. Strengthening the adaptive cognitive emotion regulation should be regarded as therapeutic and educational goal in enhancing the mental health in that athletes could use strategies that influence their appraisal of the situation to create the most appropriate emotional climate for competition.

Abstract:

Objective: The aim of the present research was to investigate the impact of positive psychology and visualization techniques on the mental health of injured athletes.Method: This study was applied in nature, and in terms of data collection, it was a survey and correlational research. The statistical population included 500 organized athletes from Zanjan County in 2024 across various sports disciplines, all of whom had at least two years of experience. A total of about 200 injured athletes were identified, and based on Cochran's formula, 131 individuals were selected as the sample using cluster random sampling and purposeful selection according to the inclusion criteria for the study. In this research, a researcher-made package based on the Oshea & Moran (2019) training program was used for mental imagery training. The positive psychology training by Susan Quilliam (2003) was also conducted over 12 sessions. The Psychological Needs in Sport Questionnaire by Vallerand et al. (2006) was administered as a pre-test and post-test.Results: The mental health scores of injured athletes across different groups showed significant differences (P=0.01). In the group receiving positive psychology training, the mean difference was 4.20, and the t-value was (3.402) at a significance level of 0.02, indicating a significant positive difference. In the visualization group, the mean difference was 3.99, with a t-value of (2.314) at a significance level of 0.03, demonstrating a positive and significant effect of visualization. In the combined group of positive psychology and visualization, the mean difference was 10.17, with a t-value of (5.724) at a significance level of 0.01, showing the highest increase in mental health scores among injured athletes. However, in the control group, no significant difference was observed with a significance level of 0.51 (P>0.05).Conclusions: Athletes face psychological issues due to the absence from competitions and decreased self-confidence after injuries. In this study, positive psychology techniques and visualization had positive effects on the mental health of these athletes and can be used as a practical approach in sports teams for injured players. The educational-psychological intervention, including training coping skills and stress management, helps athletes better cope with the psychological challenges arising from injuries and achieve better conditions.

Abstract:

The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of type of behavioral brain system on athletic and non-athletic psychological health. Participants included 312 boys and girls aged between 18 and 37 years old. After examining the type of personality and gender system and considering the level of activity in 8 groups. Multivariate analysis of variance analysis showed that participants with behavioral activation system had depression, anxiety and stress less than participants with behavioral inhibition system (p <0. 05). Boys had higher psychological health than girls (p <0. 05). Non-athlete girls with behavioral inhibition system had the highest rates of depression, anxiety and stress and boys and girls with behavioral activation system had the lowest level of depression, anxiety and stress (p <0. 05). As a result, it can be stated that exercise and behavioral activating personality system make boys and girls more psychologically healthy.
